How to connect your LinkedIn account to ChatGPT

ChatGPT cannot reach LinkedIn on its own: LinkedIn blocks browsing, and the official API only publishes posts. Adding Nilyo gives ChatGPT tools that act on your own connected account — search people, open a profile from a URL, read a conversation, draft and send a reply, send an invitation. Setup is one sign-in and no API key.

Add Nilyo to ChatGPT

There are two routes and both end in the same place. The simplest is the Nilyo app in ChatGPT: add it, sign in when prompted, done. If you prefer connecting the server yourself, enable developer mode in ChatGPT settings, add a connector with the URL https://nilyo.com/mcp, and choose OAuth — ChatGPT registers itself and opens a browser once so you can sign in and authorize your accounts. Either way there is no key to generate and nothing to paste into a settings file.

Authorize LinkedIn when ChatGPT asks

You do not have to prepare anything before your first request. Ask for what you want; if LinkedIn is not connected yet, Nilyo answers with a card inside the conversation carrying the connection link, you complete the sign-in on LinkedIn’s own page, and you come back and repeat the request. That card is also how you reconnect an expired account or choose between two accounts, and it appears only on steps that need you — never on top of an ordinary result.

Your first three prompts

Start with a read, then a resolution, then a write, in that order: it is the fastest way to see what ChatGPT actually has access to. Reads are harmless and immediate; resolution is where you check the agent found the right person; only then is a write worth trying. Nothing here needs MCP vocabulary — you ask in normal language and the tool selection happens underneath.

“What LinkedIn messages did I receive since Monday that I have not answered?”
“Open this profile and tell me where we crossed paths: linkedin.com/in/…”
“Send Ada a connection invitation with a one-line note about her post on logistics.”

Paste a profile URL, not an identifier

The natural thing to do in a chat is paste a linkedin.com/in/… URL, so that is what the tools accept: the URL is resolved to the real profile and its stable identifier before anything else runs. You never see or type an identifier, and ChatGPT cannot skip the step — passing a URL where an identifier belongs returns a corrective error naming the resolution to run first, which is what stops an invitation from going to a same-named stranger.

Run it on a schedule

Once the connector is in place, a ChatGPT task can run the same prompt every morning: summarize yesterday’s LinkedIn conversations, list invitations waiting for an answer, or flag messages that mention pricing. The account and the pacing rules are the same as in a live chat, so a scheduled prompt cannot quietly consume the day’s budget in one pass.

“Every weekday at 8, list the LinkedIn messages I received since yesterday and rank what needs an answer.”

When it does not work

Four causes cover nearly everything. The tools do not appear: the connector was added but the conversation predates it — start a new chat. ChatGPT says it cannot access LinkedIn: the account is disconnected, and the card in the answer carries the reconnection link. It acts on the wrong account: name the account in the prompt, since several can be connected. It refuses a write and mentions a limit: the daily budget of roughly one hundred LinkedIn actions is reached, and it resets — retrying harder is exactly what you should not do.

Common questions

Can ChatGPT access LinkedIn?

Not by itself — LinkedIn blocks browsing and the official API only publishes posts. With Nilyo connected, ChatGPT gets tools that act on your own LinkedIn account: search, profiles, network, conversations, invitations, posts and comments.

Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan?

You need a plan that allows apps or connectors, which is where the Nilyo tools appear. The LinkedIn side needs nothing special: a standard account works, and Sales Navigator or Recruiter only matter if you have those seats.

Can ChatGPT read my LinkedIn messages?

Yes, once the account is connected. Reading is a separate action from sending: looking at a conversation never sends anything, and a reply is an explicit step you ask for.

Can ChatGPT send a LinkedIn message or an invitation?

Yes, where the action is supported on your account. The recipient is resolved first, and if several people could match, nothing is sent and you are asked which one.

Is my LinkedIn account at risk?

You act as yourself, at a human pace: calls are serialized per account and a daily budget applies, including reads. The risk on LinkedIn comes from volume and unsolicited mass contact, which is precisely what the budget prevents.

Does this work in Claude or Cursor too?

Yes, it is the same server and the same connected account. Connect LinkedIn once and it is available in every MCP client you use, with no second authorization.

How LinkedIn works with Nilyo

Connection. Secure hosted sign-in (your LinkedIn credentials go to LinkedIn, never to the agent). Sales Navigator and Recruiter are detected automatically when your account has them.

What your agent can do. People and company search, profile lookup from a name or URL, your network and invitations, private conversations (classic, Sales Navigator, Recruiter inboxes), posts, comments and reactions, job postings and applicants, Recruiter projects.

Pacing and safety. About 100 actions per day per account, profile views and searches included; calls are serialized so an agent can never run LinkedIn requests in parallel.

  • Profile URLs are resolved to stable profile IDs before any action.
  • Invitations carry an optional note of up to 300 characters.
  • Private or restricted profiles return an explicit “not accessible” result instead of a retry loop.
