Claude + Instagram

Connect your Instagram to Claude

Meta’s API opens Instagram messaging only to Business and Creator accounts, for conversations the other person started. Connecting your own account through Nilyo gives Claude the inbox as it is, and Claude is particularly good at the part that matters here: working out what a message actually asks before answering it.

Add the connector

In Claude, open settings, go to connectors and add a custom connector with the URL https://nilyo.com/mcp, choosing OAuth. Claude registers itself and opens a browser once so you sign in and authorize the accounts it may use. The same connected Instagram is then reachable from claude.ai, the desktop app and Claude Code.

Read the person, not just the message

An Instagram DM is often three words. Whether it deserves a price list, a shipping answer or nothing at all depends on who sent it, so the useful loop is: list the conversations, read the thread, look at the profile, then draft. Claude chains those reads without being told, which is exactly what makes a three-word message answerable.

“What Instagram DMs came in overnight, and which are real sales questions?”
“Read this conversation, look at who they are, and draft an answer in our tone.”

Drafting is the safe half

Answering a customer in public-facing DMs is not a place for surprises. Reading is free of consequence; sending is an explicit action you request. Put your rules in a Claude Project — what you never promise, which questions go to a human — and every conversation in that project inherits them.

One account among several

The question people actually ask is rarely per-channel. With WhatsApp, LinkedIn and a mailbox connected too, “did anyone ask about the September order, anywhere?” is one answer instead of four searches, and Instagram stops being a tab somebody has to remember to check.

“Did anyone ask about the September order on Instagram, WhatsApp or email?”

Pacing you do not have to think about

Writes are budgeted at a hundred actions per day per account and calls are serialized with a short random delay, so an assistant cannot empty an inbox in one burst. Instagram reacts to rhythm as much as to volume, and a burst is what draws attention to an account.

Common questions

Can Claude read my Instagram messages?

Yes, once your Instagram account is connected through Nilyo. It lists conversations, reads a thread and can look up the profile behind a message before drafting anything.

Do I need a Business or Creator account?

No. That requirement belongs to Meta’s Graph API route. Nilyo connects the account you already use.

Will it answer customers on its own?

Sending is an explicit action you request. Drafting is the sane default, and a Project instruction can make confirmation a standing rule.

Is my account at risk?

Calls are serialized and spaced, with a daily budget per account. The behaviour that gets Instagram accounts restricted is bursts and unsolicited volume, which the budget prevents by construction.

How Instagram works with Nilyo

Connection. Secure hosted sign-in on your own Instagram account; a verification code may be requested by Instagram on the provider side, never in the chat.

What your agent can do. Direct messages (read, reply, send), profile lookup, followers and following lists, your own profile.

Pacing and safety. About 100 actions per day per account, calls serialized.

  • Instagram limits new conversations with people who do not follow you; the agent says so instead of retrying.
