Outlook + ChatGPT

Connect Outlook to ChatGPT

Outlook connects with a Microsoft sign-in, which matters more than it sounds: the alternative used by self-hosted integrations is registering an application in Entra ID and asking an administrator to consent, and that is where most of those setups quietly die.

Connect it in two minutes

Add the Nilyo app in ChatGPT, or enable developer mode and add a connector with the URL https://nilyo.com/mcp and OAuth. Then connect the mailbox: give the address and the password and the servers are detected from the address — you normally never type a host or a port. Only if detection fails are you asked for them, and the authoritative place to copy them from is the account settings of the mail client you already use.

Sign in, do not register an application

A Graph-based integration needs an app registration, a client secret and, on a company tenant, admin consent before anything runs at all. The hosted Microsoft sign-in needs none of that: you authorize on Microsoft’s page and the mailbox is connected. Two caveats worth knowing on a work account: an administrator can block third-party access at tenant level, in which case no consumer route will work either, and basic authentication over IMAP has been retired on Microsoft 365, so the sign-in is not merely the easier path, it is the one that still works.

What it is actually good for here

On a work mailbox the useful requests are about commitments and threads left hanging: what did we promise this client in writing, which messages from this week still wait on me. Attachments come back as files, so a contract or an invoice is read rather than mentioned, and a draft in your own drafts folder is the sane default where a wrong send is not a private mistake.

“What arrived since yesterday that needs an answer from me?”
“Find the thread where we agreed the delivery date and quote the message.”

A work mailbox asks different questions

On a professional inbox the useful requests are about commitments and threads left hanging: what did we promise this client in writing, which messages from this week still wait on me. Attachments come back as files, so a contract or an invoice is read rather than mentioned, and a draft left in your own drafts folder is the sane default where a wrong send is not a private mistake.

When it stops working

Two causes cover nearly everything. The password is refused after it worked: an application password was revoked, or the mailbox password was changed — generate or update it and reconnect the same mailbox rather than adding a second one. The agent suddenly sees nothing: the session expired, and the card in the answer carries the reconnection link. A mailbox that moved host is reconnected with the new servers, not re-added, so anything referring to it keeps working.

Common questions

Can ChatGPT read my Outlook mailbox?

Yes, once connected with a Microsoft sign-in. It lists, reads and searches the mailbox and can draft or send when you ask.

Do I need an Entra app registration or admin consent?

No. That is what self-hosted Graph-based servers require. The hosted sign-in avoids the registration entirely, though a tenant administrator can still block third-party access globally.

Can I connect it over IMAP instead?

Basic authentication over IMAP has been retired on Microsoft 365, so the Microsoft sign-in is the route that works.

Does it work with a personal Outlook.com account?

Yes, the same way as a work account, with the same tools afterwards.

How Email works with Nilyo

Connection. Gmail and Microsoft 365/Outlook through their official sign-in (the “Unipile” name appears on the consent screen: Unipile SAS operates the connection). Any other mailbox through IMAP/SMTP: OVH, Zoho, iCloud, IONOS, Infomaniak, Fastmail, Yahoo, GMX and self-hosted servers.

What your agent can do. Folders and labels, listing and searching messages, reading with attachments, drafts, sending and true replies, moving and labelling, contacts on Gmail and Microsoft.

Pacing and safety. No local budget; provider limits apply. IMAP mailboxes are read live, so listings are paged (50 messages max per page).

  • “How many emails today” uses the folder counts of the mailbox; “today” is a date filter, never a guess.
  • On IMAP a message id changes after a move; Nilyo returns the new id so the agent keeps working on the right message.
